Snowglobes were huge domes across the Earth which contained vast sections of the Antarctic and Arctic in order to preserve them from global warming. They were created by the Earth government and each was identified by number. Due to their maintenance being expensive, most became visitor attractions, leaving only three snowglobes to be used for scientific research.

Snowglobes included Snowglobe 6 and Snowglobe 7, which was located in Dubai. (PROSE: Snowglobe 7)

Behind the scenes

In the real world, of course snow globes are hand-held ornaments that produce a fake snow storm when shaken. Director Ben Wheatley claimed that he deliberately tucked away a St. Eligius Hospital snow globe inside Peter Capaldi's original TARDIS set. On the Into the Dalek commentary, he says that those knowledgeable of St. Elsewhere will know what that means. Making an oblique reference to the Tommy Westphall Universe theory, he explained, "The history of American television is within the snow globe, and now that's in the TARDIS, so there ya go."
