Rumours

  • This story may feature the Ood.
  • Being Mars, this might relate to the Ice Warriors or possibly the Sycorax, or the waters of mars may be sentient.
  • More references to the Ice Warriors appearing by the companion Adelaide asking someone unknown at the start "State your name, rank, and intention," and with individual Ice Warriors having ranks this may tie into their appearance.
  • This episode may feature a water-based villain as shown in the trailer.
  • The episode appears to be set in some kind of bio-dome filled with vegetation.
  • David Tennant has been spotted while filming wearing a space suit identical to that of "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit" hinting that it takes places roughly in the same time period. Spotting of an Ood also supports this theory.
  • This story will likely be set on the planet Mars, as indicated by the title.
  • The cloister bell is heard ringing in the teaser; it's unclear if it will be heard in the story or is just used as part of the teaser soundtrack.
  • The Ice Warriors, the Sycorax and the Osirians have connections with Mars leading fans to belive one of these will return in this Special.

Story Notes

  • As Lindsay Duncan has been cast as a companion, she is the oldest actor to play a companion since the beginning of the series, although this title will be taken away from her in the next episode when Bernard Cribbins becomes the Doctor's companion.
  • Russel T davies has said in Doctor who magazine, that this will be a very scary episode of Doctor who, "nightmarish" he discribed it. It could, therfore be broadcast, on Saturday 31st October, Halloween.

Filming Locations

  • Victoria Place, Newport
  • National Botanic Gardens of Wales, Carmarthenshire
