Owen McPolin was the director of photography on Matt Smith's first full episode, The Eleventh Hour. He had previously worked with that episode's director, Adam Smith, on Little Dorrit.

In the first decade of the 21st century, the Cork-born — and largely Éire-based — cinematographer was thrice nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award, most recently for Dorrit. He won a Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival for the 2007 Australian tele-film, The Catalpa Rescue, known in America as Irish Escape.
