Following the broadcast of Can You Hear Me?, fans voiced their disdain at the Doctor's apparent dismissal of Graham's opening up to her of his fear that his cancer could come back, with many citing the moment as being out of character of her. The complaints department explained that the intention of the scene was to show the Doctor being unable to deal with the subject matter properly, and not being able to find the right words as a result.
