Summary

The second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe are implied to have recently landed, expecting to arrive in Hope City. Jamie, on his own, notices that no one is around and the city is in ruins before deciding to reunite with the Doctor and Zoe. Noticing Jamie, a robot emerges from the rubble, noting that Humans have been extinct for 1,000 years. Jamie returns to the Doctor and Zoe, the latter of which asks him if he found anything interesting. The Doctor is shocked that Hope City is in ruins, and Jamie explains further that it seems that it had been destroyed in an atomic explosion. The time travelers go and explore the city, where they are noticed by the robot. The Doctor decides to split up the group, leaving Jamie and Zoe alone. Zoe hears something, and Jamie goes to investigate. Zoe waits for a long time before noticing mechanical footprints, which belong to the robot, who is right in front of her! The robot lumbers closer and closer to Zoe, she cries for help. Jamie, meanwhile, is on his own, deciding that they must have been mistaken, and begins to go back to Zoe. He later sees the robot, and cries for help. This cry is noticed by the Doctor, who belives that it comes from the back of a building. There he sees a robot in full working order! The robot says that he was expecting him, as it saw him in the minds of his companions, to which the Doctor asks where they are. The robot says they're safe right now, but it must destroy him. The Doctor points out that machines were made to serve man, to which the robot says "I am the Robot King, I command! Come!" The Robot King shows the Doctor his missing companions, who feel like they've been brainwashed. The Robot King says he knows there aren't more of them due to his telepathic powers. The Robot King says it is the only survivor of a war that destroyed mankind, a war that has caused it to think that humans are not responsible enough to live. The Robot King picks the Doctor up, where he finds a switch. After it is flicked, the Robot King colapses.

Notes

  • The Robot King's telepathic powers don't seem to notice the Doctor's alienness, or anything non-human about him at all.
  • The TARDIS doesn't feature in this story.
