In 2056, Apollo 34 was launched from Earth to establish Bowie Base One, mankind's first permanent colony on Mars. Commanded by Captain Adelaide Brooke, the trip to Mars took two years (DW: The Waters of Mars).

Elsewhere, Omega attempted to take over the Doctor's mind via the Fusion Energy Research Network in California. The Doctor foils the plan with the help of fellow Time Lord Drax, and the original version of K-9 he gave Sarah Jane Smith (Search for the Doctor).
