Mini-episodes, or minisodes, are short episodes of Doctor Who usually released online, in a DVD set or broadcast during charity telethons such as Children in Need and Comic Relief. They can also serve as intros to other stories and be promotional videos.

The Sarah Jane Adventures was also granted minisodes, making it the only spin-off to do so.

The Collection mini-episodes

The term of "mini-episodes" was also used by Pete McTighe in DWM 571 to refer to the short live-action Doctor Who stories whose creation he oversaw to accompany trailers for The Collection, noting that "calling them trailers feels a bit reductive". Some of these shorts broke the fourth wall while others were set in the Doctor Who universe. Contrary to traditional mini-episodes, these naturally did not tie in with the then-current season of Doctor Who on TV, but rather caught up with some element of the season being released in a Collection box-set at the time of release of the mini-episode.

2022, for the first time, saw a new, recut edition of a previously released minisode, A Fix with Sontarans.
