Fired or Let Go?

Sounds like he was "let go" rather than "fired". Reason I bring this up is there's a difference between the two terms. Let go means you got pink slipped because of something that happened, like an accident, whereas fired is the "you screwed up, get out of here". I read the bit in the article (about the controller of BBC One at the time), and it seemed very, er, incomplete feeling, like that's the official story rather than the whole story.
