Messier 87, known as M87, was a galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster of the constellation Virgo.
History
The galaxy was discovered in the 1700s by French astronomer Charles Messier and listed in his Messier Catalogue. Circa 4,999,999,740 CE one of its constituient planets, New Savannah, joined the New Earth Empire, which was presumably set up before the aforementioned date. By 5,000,000,023 CE, humanity was fully established (with a population of at least ten million) on the planet New Earth after the original had been destroyed 23 years earlier. (DW: New Earth)
The Macra were called the "Scourge of the Galaxy(M87)" by the Doctor. This may mean that the Macra originate from M87. (DW: Gridlock)
