The GENIEs were a race of small man made creatures with the power to grant their owner's wishes. Their name was obviously inspired by the genie in the lamp idea but the letters stand for Genetically Engineered Neural Imagination Engine. Of course the GENIEs stormed the Earth. You could have anything you wanted and get rid of anything you didn't. Everyone had one, and if you didn't you could just wish for one with someone elses. But being human, the people of the Earth were never satisfied. Once their little dreams came true they wished for more. Soon it got out of control and the entire earth was turning to ashes because of all the energy that was needed to make peoples wishes come true. There were endless paradoxes where people would wish for things to have never happened meaning they never needed to wish that it hadn't happened i.e the paradox.

With the end of the world in sight the original creators realised they had to do something and devised a plan that would end the chaos. They used the first GENIE ever made and wished that all the others had never existed taking them back in time to when it was just being created so they could destroy the lab in which it was made along with the research and blue-prints so that the rest would never be created, thus saving the human race from it's own greed. This required a huge amount of energy, however, and the Genie would normally get energy from it's surroundings but there wasn't enough. The creators new this and therefore had to sacrifice the Sun to save the Earth and it's people from themselves. So they made the GENIE not only commit genocide on it's own species but also commit suicide because there was no way it could survive taking in the energy of the Sun.

But the inventor had a daughter. A daughter who had no thoughts for GENIEs and wishes, this being before the days where dreams and nightmares alike came true. Ignorant of the consequences of her actions, not knowing the original GENIE was in the basement, she wished to live in what she thought was a better time. Ancient Rome in fact. Little did she know that the Doctor and Rose would arrive shortly after her.

When they eventually found the GENIE, the Doctor saw what evil was to come and knew that it must not. He took the inventors daughter home, keeping the GENIE with him til he could figure out what to do with it. It was Rose, however, that found the solution. She wished for the GENIE's freedom and the Doctor took him somewhere safe to live out it's life in peace, only granting wishes when it chose and living happily ever after. (NSA: The Stone Rose)

Note: Someone along the way wished to live in the time when Arabian Nights was set, and so bringing with them the idea of Genies because of the GENIEs which inspired the name of the GENIE in the future. And although the GENIEs now never really exsisted, such a huge event in time was sure to ripple back and leave a sort of echo.
