Garlic was a herb. Vampires suffered adverse effects in the presence of garlic due to an allergy to its allyl component. The vampires and humans of a planet in E-Space referred to it as garil. The Fourth Doctor was rather fond of garlic. (EDA: The Eight Doctors)
