Mao Tse-Tung was the communist leader of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. The Third Doctor mentioned to a Chinese delegate that one of his earlier incarnations had joined Mao Tse-Tung on the Long March, during which Mao allowed the Doctor to call him "Tse-Tung," in January 1935.
