Forum:Feedback on a new idea wanted!
If this thread's title doesn't specify it's spoilery, don't bring any up.
Hi, had an idea and wanted to know what others thought! I know it would require a fair bit of on-site research for existing images, and a great deal of time implementing this suggestion, but ... do people think that the TV pages would be enhanced by having main cast listings structured as a gallery featuring an 'appropriate' facial shot of the character - with character name shown above the actors name?
For example

So what do people think? I'm prepared to do some of the work (one story fully at a time so as not to create glaring gaps in the page) hopefully this would draw people to follow links to particular characters and more importantly to the actors, that they may be encouraged to edit rather than simply find a reference to external sites and actor info. - Personally i don't approve of galleries as they are very messy so deffinatly not on each of the tv serial (and later episode) pages but i don't see why not do it on the main cast section of each season or create a gallery for each season having main cast up the top and then actors for individual series down the bottom. Hi Dark Lord, I'm not sure I understand your dislike of galleries. Messy?! Is that all galleries? or have you specific examples in mind. I tend to use galleries quite a bit in various sections I've done (mainly books, comics/magazines and comic strips) I can't think of more boring examples than text laden pages on such visual material! I appreciate that the infobox image at the top should be the main image (in the vast majority of pages) and that images should be pertinant to the text, but I see nothing wrong with cover galleries for example, as they are often a main point of reference. With regards to the cast bit don't you think that there is some merit in the "Oh, I recognise them, its him/her from that programme we like ...IN DR WHO!!"? where sometimes the name means nothing when presented in simply a list? - Maybe its just me but i prefer cast / character lists becuase they are universal (all wiki's use them) in particular i like the audios, but thats another matter don't get me wrong i have nothing against galleries, they have there uses like showing cover artists works, multiple covers for novel articles to the more gallary only pages which i dispise but seem to weed there way into all wiki's such as the gallery of daleks page ect. I would be happy to work with your idea and expand upon it (perhapse create a subpage and create a finished example of your idea) but i still think something like this is a good idea but something that belongs on its own page (or pehapse a list of main actors/actress's on season pages) but not on each individual serial.
This is just my opinion and if anyone else has any input i would be happy to consider what they have to say but at the moment i just don't think it will work (as i have said above if you create a copy of one on a sub user page and create one i will be able to see what your trying to do, if you need help with creating this leave a message on my talk page) Dark Lord Xander 03:12, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think this would be largely a waste of time and space. If people want to know what a given character looks like, they only have to click on the link. What we need is more time spent on actually gathering photos of the characters for the character pages, not putting the ones we have into every single story page. This idea would make articles unbearably HUGE. Please, please don't do this. CzechOut ☎ | ✍ 10:13, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'm against the idea. Some of the TV pages which have an illustrative number of images, plus text (City of Death is one example, even after a thinning out) it's still big. Adding extra images for cast lists would seriously push the page size over the limit. I also agree with CzechOut that pictures of the various actors is one click away, additionally if/when the pages are at their optimum there are/should be images illustrating the story through the plot descriptions. --Tangerineduel 13:45, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
