- Sir Isaac Newton dies.
- Thomas Gainsborough is born. He will paint a portrait of Ace that by 1988 is hanging in Windsor Castle ("Silver Nemesis"). Scaroth will also acquire some of Gainsborough's paintings ("City of Death").
- The Doctor appears to Reinette for the first time during the events of "The Girl in the Fireplace." The Doctor noted that August was not a very good month in this year.
