Captain Briggs was the commander of a space freighter which had been infiltrated by a group of Cybermen. They planned to crash the ship on Earth to destroy the interstellar conference where the upcoming Cyber-Wars were being discussed.
She shares her surname with the master of another doomed ship whom the Doctor encountered: Captain Benjamin Briggs of the Mary Celeste. (TV: The Chase)
