Stuart Hood was the Controller of Programmes for Television for the British Broadcasting Corporation, appointed after the broadcast of season 1 was underway. On 28 May, he was the recipient of a memo from Kenneth Adam, whose sentiment he immediately passed on to Sydney newman and Donald Wilson. Adam, and therefore Hood, were concerned that it was "silly" for the First Doctor and his companions to separate every time "danger threatens". Reasonable people in the real world, the memo argued, wouldn't do this, and even Adam's 3½-year-old grand-daughter knew it.
