The Kin were imprisoned by the Time Lords however escaped after the Last Great Time War. The Kin numbered only one, however could time travel, effectively duplicating itself. Wanting to find the last of the Time Lords the Kin travelled to Earth 1984 and began to legally buy the planet. In 2010 it had created an alternate timeline where humanity was extinct and Earth was legally its property. However the Eleventh Doctor tricked the Kin into being trapped at the beginning of time.
