Sonic lipstick
The sonic lipstick was a device regularly employed by Sarah Jane Smith similar to the sonic screwdriver owned by the Doctor, while resembling a real lipstick closely enough not to seem suspicious.
Profile
History
The Doctor had left the sonic lipstick for Sarah inside a sliding panel on the side of K-9 Mark IV. (Sarah Jane Adventures website)
In the episode SJA:Enemy of the Bane the Sonic Lipstick is destroyed by Sontaran Commander Kaagh after deliberately stepping on it causing it to smash. At the conclusion of Part 2 she reveals she has another saying to Rani - "Do I look like the kind of girl who carries only one lipstick" which she then uses to destroy the Tungushkus Scroll
Features
It generated a pinkish-red light when used. Like the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, it also remained ineffective against deadlock seals. The Slitheen described it as a sonic disruptor. (SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen)
Uses
Sarah Jane had used it to open and close doors, send an electrical charge, and cut cables. She claimed she could destroy the Gorgon's portal key with sonic disruptions from the lipstick, but this may have been a bluff. (SJA: Eye of the Gorgon)
She later used it to interfere with Mr. Grantham's comms device causing a very high-pitched noise. (SJA: Warriors of Kudlak)
Sarah Jane used the device to get through a door and escape the testing of the reality bomb. (DW: Journey's End)
She uses the lipstick to cut a piece of meteorite. (SJA: The Day of the Clown)
Behind the Scenes
- Character Options released a Sonic Lipstick replica featuring lights and sounds. The toy was slightly different from the original, in that the ridges in the actual prop are less deep (SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen, The Last Sontaran) and the coat was shiny metal rather than bland brown plactic (SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen, The Last Sontaran)
- The origin of the sonic lipstick, while given on the SJA website, is not mentioned on screen. The closest reference occurs in Invasion of the Bane when Sarah Jane invokes the Doctor's name when using the device.
