"The Waters of Mars" is an upcoming Doctor Who special which is due to air "around November-ish". Russel T Davies confirmed it on BBC Breakfast on 7 April 2009, when he came to talk about Planet of the Dead. As of mid-April 2009 a broadcast date has not yet been announced, however Davies said on BBC Breakfast that a "November-ish" date was being considered (previously it had been indicated the special wouldn't air until closer to Christmas 2009). The BBC did not confirm the broadcast date of Planet of the Dead until a week prior to its broadcast; therefore it is assumed a confirmed date for the broadcast of The Waters of Mars won't be made available until late in 2009.

Story Notes

  • As Lindsay Duncan has been cast as a companion, she is the oldest actor to play a companion since the beginning of the series, although this title will be taken away from her in the next episode when Bernard Cribbins becomes the Doctor's companion.
  • Russel T Davies has said in Doctor Who Magazine that this will be a very scary episode of Doctor Who, as he described it "nightmarish". Therefore it may be be broadcast on Saturday 31st October, Halloween.
  • Julie Gardner said on the Easter DW Confidential that another Your Song is Ending style reference will be made in this episode as well as playing a massive part last 2 specials.
  • The IMDB.com website have placed on their website that the broadcast date is the 14th November 2009. Wether this is true is yet to be revealed. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1413314/
  • Filming for the special began on 23 February 2009.[5] In late February, David Tennant, Duncan and other actors were seen filming in Victoria Place, Newport.[10] The filming took place on a city street, which the production team covered with artificial snow.[10] Also present during filming were a small robot inscribed with the word "GADGET" and Ood Sigma, from the 2008 episode Planet of the Ood.[11] [source needed]
  • A 30-second teaser trailer for this episode aired after the broadcast of "Planet of the Dead" showing Adelaide pointing a high tech gun at the Doctor and ordering him to state his name, rank and intention before hearing the Doctor say "Water always wins".[12] [source needed]

  • This story may feature the Ood.[source needed]
  • David Tennant has been spotted while filming wearing a space suit identical to that of The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit and similar to the one in 42 hinting that it takes places roughly in the same time period. Spotting of an Ood also supports this theory. [source needed]
  • John Simm was spotted on set while this episode was in production. As Russell stated that this story will be loosely connected to the final two specials, this could once more foreshadow the Master's return has he had a three part episode like the final three Specials of 2009. [source needed]
  • The Berserkers may appear as the eyes of the water creature appear similar to those of a Berserker.[source needed]

  • The cloister bell can be heard ringing in the teaser, it is unclear if it will be heard in the story or is just used as part of the teaser soundtrack.
  • Will feature a water based entity.
  • Appears to be set in some kind of Bio-dome filled with vegetation.
  • Likely be set on the planet Mars, as indicated by the title or the creature/s will be from Mars
  • Water entity may be a member of the Water Hive
