The Doctor tells Dermot that miners sometimes used to take canaries down into the mines to check that the air was breathable. Missy later tells Clara Oswald that "every miner needs a canary" when trapped in the sewers of Skaro. (TV: The Witch's Familiar)

Story notes

  • American TV actor David Hasselhoff, who appears in his capacity as a judge on Britain's Got Talent, is best known for his roles in the cult series Knight Rider and Baywatch; at the height of the popularity of Baywatch in the early 1990s, Hasselhoff was one of numerous actors reported in the media as being considered for the role of the Doctor in a proposed, but never-produced film.
  • Graham Norton has two "infamous" connections to Doctor Who: audio from one of his programmes accidentally intruded into the original BBC One broadcast of TV: Rose in 2005, and in 2010 an animated banner promoting one of his shows disrupted the cliffhanger for TV: The Time of Angels, for which Norton later apologised on his program by having his animated self get exterminated by a Dalek.
  • Though generally considered invalid, this is the first time original Doctor Who footage was first broadcast on ITV - the BBC's rival television network in the UK.
