- January - DWM 84 was published.
- 5 January - Warriors of the Deep Part 1 debuted on BBC1, launching Season 21.
- 6 January - Warriors of the Deep Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- 12 January - Warriors of the Deep Part 3 debuted on BBC1.
- 12 January - Doctor Who - Mawdryn Undead was first published.
- 13 January - Warriors of the Deep Part 4 debuted on BBC1.
- 19 January - The Awakening Part 1 debuted on BBC1. This was the final two-part Doctor Who story produced as two twenty-five-minute episodes.
- 20 January - The Awakening Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- 26 January - Frontios Part 1 debuted on BBC1.
- 27 January - Frontios Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- February - DWM 85 was published. The magazine is now named The Official Doctor Who Magazine.
- 2 February - Frontios Part 3 debuted on BBC1.
- 3 February - Frontios Part 4 debuted on BBC1.
- 8 February - Resurrection of the Daleks Part 1 debuted on BBC1.
- 15 February - Resurrection of the Daleks Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- 23 February - Planet of Fire Part 1 debuted on BBC1.
- 24 February - Planet of Fire Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- March - DWM 86 was published.
- 1 March - Planet of Fire Part 3 debuted on BBC1.
- 2 March - Planet of Fire Part 4 debuted on BBC1.
- 8 March - The Caves of Androzani Part 1 debuted on BBC1.
- 9 March - The Caves of Androzani Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- 15 March - The Caves of Androzani Part 3 debuted on BBC1.
- 15 March - Doctor Who - Kinda was first published.
- 16 March - The Caves of Androzani Part 4 debuted on BBC1, ending in Peter Davison's regeneration into Colin Baker.
- 22 March - The Twin Dilemma Part 1 debuted on BBC1, launching the Colin Baker era.
- 23 March - The Twin Dilemma Part 2 debuted on BBC1.
- 29 March - The Twin Dilemma Part 3 debuted on BBC1.
- 30 March - The Twin Dilemma Part 4 debuted on BBC1, concluding Season 21.
- April - DWM 87 was published.
- May - DWM 88 was published.
- 3 May - Doctor Who - Snakedance was first published. With this release, Target Books returned to non-photographic covers, although for this and the next Fifth Doctor novelisation, a modified series logo incorporating a photograph of Peter Davison was utilised.
- 24 May - Doctor Who - Enlightenment was first published.
- June - DWM 89 was published.
- Summer - Doctor Who Magazine Summer Special 1984 was published.
- July - DWM 90 was published.
- 19 July - Doctor Who - The Dominators was first published. It was the first non-Fifth Doctor novelisation in two years.
- August - The Doctor Who Annual 1985 was published.
- August - DWM 91 was published.
- 16 August - Doctor Who - Warriors of the Deep was first published. It was the first fully-artistic Fifth Doctor novelisation cover and the first to use the new white-outline version of the Target Books logo.
- September - DWM 92 was published.
- 20 September - Doctor Who - The Aztecs was first published. It was the last book to use the colour version of the Target Books logo.
- 20 September - REF: Doctor Who: The Key to Time was first published.
- October - Marvel Comics in the United States launched the monthly comic book Doctor Who. It carried colourised reprints of comic strips and other features from Doctor Who Magazine. Initially, Fourth Doctor material was featured. Fifth Doctor material followed the next year.
- October - DWM 93 was published.
- 18 October - Doctor Who - Inferno was first published.
- 19 October - REF: The Doctor Who Pattern Book was first published.
- Winter - Doctor Who Magazine Winter Special 1984 was published.
- November - DWM 94 was published.
- 15 November - Doctor Who - The Highlanders was first published.
- 15 November - REF: Doctor Who: Brain Teasers and Mind Benders was first published by Target Books, written by sixteen-year-old fan Adrian Heath.
- December - DWM 95 was published.
- 10 December - Doctor Who - Frontios was first published.
