Depth charges were explosive weapons that targeted deep under the sea. UNIT oversaw the test launch of one. It accidentally destroyed the Carpanthan city, something the Third Doctor and Liz Shaw were put on trial for when they went down to investigate. (COMIC: The Fishmen of Carpantha)
