Specials

Anyone who counts the specials as the series before the one they aired in is, to be frank, idiotic. Yes, one BBC site says that The Christmas Invasion is series 1 and so on; but, uh, they were filmed with the series after and they were aired with the series after and they're on the DVD set for the series after when the BBC website says they are. In the US and other nations they air in syndication as the premier of series 2, series 3, and series 4 respectively. We have ONE source versus SEVERAL that are all equally official. It makes a hell of a lot more sense to go with the latter and TARDIS wiki should reflect that.

What is a companion?

In my view, a companion needs to travel with the Doctor in at least two stories or assist him regularly in a time when he doesn't have a TARDIS (so basically, just Three). Sara Kingdom counts due to the unusual length of said story (heck, you can fit in other ones into the middle of it); the UNIT people count only for Three. So television companions by doctor...

  • One has Barbara, Ian, Susan, Vicki, Steven, Katarina, Sara, Dodo, Ben, and Polly.
  • Two has Ben, Polly, Jamie, Zoe, and Victoria.
  • Three has Liz', the Brigadier, Jo, Yates, Benton, and Sarah Jane.
  • Four has Sarah Jane, Harry, Leela, K9, Romana I, Romana II, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan
  • Five has Nyssa, Tegan, Adric, Kamelion, Turlough and Peri
  • Six has Peri and Mel
  • Seven has Mel and Ace
  • Eight has no onscreen companions
  • Nine has Rose, Adam, and Jack
  • Ten has Rose, Mickey, Martha, and Donna. Wilf may or may not count by my definition, but I'll count him regardless of if he fits, because he's Wilf and that justifies everything.
  • Eleven has whoever Gillan is playing
