User talk:BamMitch
Thanks for your edits! We hope you'll keep on editing with us. This is a great time to have joined us, because now you can play the Game of Rassilon with us and win cool stuff! Well, okay, badges. That have no monetary value. And that largely only you can see. But still: they're cool!
We've got a couple of important quirks for a Wikia wiki, so let's get them out of the way first.
British English, please
We generally use British English round these parts, so if you're American, please be sure you set your spell checker to BrEng, and take a gander at our spelling cheat card.
Spoilers aren't cool
We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.
Other useful stuff
Aside from those two things, we also have some pages that you should probably read when you get a chance, like:
- the listing of all our help, policy and guideline pages
- our Manual of Style
- our image use policy
- our user page policy
- a list of people whose job it is to help you
If you're brand new to wiki editing — and we all were, once! — you probably want to check out these tutorials at Wikipedia, the world's largest wiki:
Remember that you should always sign your comments on talk and vote pages using four tildes like this:Thanks for becoming a member of the TARDIS crew! If you have any questions, see the Help pages, add a question to one of the Forums or ask on my talk page. Revanvolatrelundar ☎ 17:26, September 17, 2015 (UTC)
Deadname policy discussion
Hi, I read your edit summary. However, it does not supersede our policies. Before trying to diffuse the situation, let me mention that you do not help resolve this issue by threats. The standard answer to "I will have to take further action", in the words of Punisher is, "you do what you gotta do". This is not the course of action I am taking right now.
The issue of deadnames has come up some time ago. It is not a trivial matter. And you certainly cannot expect it to be resolved exactly the way you want. The solution, if we manage to respect each other enough to reach it, will be a compromise between the needs of the trans community and the needs of DW fan community.
This issue is currently under discussion by admin. Changing policy takes time. We need to figure out a way to respect the needs of the creative trans people without denying wiki readers necessary information. Now, mind you that one of the admin is trans themselves, meaning that we have all the understanding of the sensitivities we need. But this will require time. When a single user goes around and forces the solution the way they see fit (and further engages in edit reversal with an admin) makes the final resolution that much further away. This will not be decided by force. Nothing ever is. It will, hopefully, be decided by communication and understanding each other's position. The pages are protected until we find a reasonable and mutually satisfactory new way to credit trans people.
I am asking you and any other trans people that feel offended to stand down and give us time to make this decision in peace and quiet. Changing things without discussion will only take admin time away from this decision because we will be restoring the current status instead of thinking how to improve it.
If you really really feel you need to do something, I have a life hack for you. If you persuade Big Finish to change online credits on their website, we will have to change them here on Tardis wiki accordingly. You see, the reason deadnames continue to be used here for the time being has nothing to do with disrespecting trans people. It is because those are the only names a Doctor Who fan can find on the CD box and, more importantly, on the Big Finish website. We record the reality as it is. If searching for a name on the BF website yields no hits because there the name is completely different, then we have effectively misled the reader. It is unreasonable to expect a random DW fan to know every trans person who worked on DW and know how to find their deadname based on their real name. That is why deadnames cannot be dropped completely. We did remove boldface on the page you mentioned. We are thinking how to minimize the exposure of the name. Please be patient. Do you feel like a badass quoting The Punisher and telling trans people to "stand down"? Useless fuckwit. I mean, you're really gonna sit there and say this is about "not misleading the reader"? On a wiki that is practically unusable because pathetic edit-nerds like yourself have cluttered it with utterly inane articles like 'turkey baster' and 'being into musical theatre'? On a wiki that counts throwaway joke comic strips as canon?? On a wiki where every single article is clogged with useless infodumps??? Give me a fucking break. Readers could not be more misled as is. What this is really about is your transphobia. How hard would it be to set up a redirect from people's deadnames to their actual names? Not too hard, I should think, for the kind of editors who would spend half an hour writing an article about literal faeces. And of course you can't resist the opportunity to bring up Big Finish audios, apropos of literally nothing, lest we all forget how knowledgeable you are about the show.
"We record the reality as is." This quote tells me everything I need to know about your opinions on trans people. Their deadnames are their real names to you. You don't respect their identity. Fuck off you absolute worm of a person. NilsoxTheresaMay ☎ 15:21, March 20, 2019 (UTC)
