Spartacus (film)

Spartacus was a film about the title character's slave uprising against the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC.

Kirk Douglas played Spartacus in the film. When she met the real Spartacus in 71 BC, Polly Wright thought that he was nothing like Douglas but that he was nevertheless "a bit of a dish" with his long dark hair and the wicked look in his eye.

Ben Jackson, who thought that the film was "cracking stuff", reminded Polly of its final scene in which many of the defeated slaves were crucified along the road after she suggested that the two of them and Jamie McCrimmon help Spartacus. An irritated Polly countered that it was "just a stupid film". (PROSE: The Slave War)

Ian Chesterton had also seen the film. When he was forced to fight Delos as a gladiator in July 64, he felt his situation was similar to Douglas' character's and recalled how in the film, the two combatants spared one another's lives and successfully turned on their captors. (PROSE: The Romans)
