Theme music can refer to two major types of music. Typically, it is thought of as the music which is played over the opening and closing titles of an episode. However, it can also be a leitmotif, or theme which is played to identify a character or a race. Though leitmotifs were very occasionally used during the 1963 version of the Doctor Who, they have become considerably more common in the BBC Wales Whoniverse. It should be noted, as well, that most episodes of the BBC Wales version of Doctor Who also have music which particularly identifies them, but these compositions are generally considered "suites" more than "themes".
