Alex Hopkins was the leader of Torchwood Cardiff in the 1990s.

Biography

Alex's mother, Marjorie Hopkins, had cancer but went into remission. He never married or had children. He joined Torchwood Cardiff and became its head. He had no love for Torchwood London, who he did not think cared for his branch. In late 1999, Alex was given the opportunity to become a spy for the Committee, but he refused.

On 31 December 1999, Alex hunted a Spiroform in Newport, where he was approached by the little girl, who he had heard of and told that he was unable to repatriate her given that her home planet was gone. She told him that his mother's cancer would again become harmful in three months and gave him Object 1, telling him that it would reveal which of his teammates worked for the Committee.

Alex prepared the Hub for a Torchwood New Year's party and, whilst waiting for his teammates, succumbed to his curiosity and opened Object 1. He saw the 456 and Miracle Day, amongst other things, and realised that Torchwood were not prepared for the 21st century. He shot and killed Karen Baldwin, James Unsworth and, lastly, Ariana. (AUDIO: The Torchwood Archive) He called Yvonne Hartman at Torchwood One, telling her that they were not ready. (AUDIO: One Rule)

When Jack arrived at the Hub, Alex told him what he had done and handed over command to him. He shot himself, earning a place on the Red List. (TV: Fragments)

Legacy

Jack was hit by lightning on Cotter Paluni's World and had a vision of his final conversation with Alex ending with Alex's suicide. (AUDIO: Red Skies)

Personality

Alex was a stickler for the rules. He was loyal to Torchwood, refusing to spy for the Committee. (AUDIO: The Torchwood Archive)
