During Marco Polo's initial journey to Cathay, in the 1270s, he purchased a set of chess pieces which Barbara Wright would later call "magnificient". (TV: "The Singing Sands")

In the real world there are several places in Iran called Hormuz, however it is most likely that Marco Polo purchased them from the city in the Persian Gulf.
