The eyepiece, also called the eyestick, is the part of the Dalek that enables it to see. The eyepiece can magnify images so that the Dalek can see across great distances.
The eyepiece is the most vulnerable part of the Dalek. When it is taken out or covered, the Dalek no longer remains a threat. After the Dalek's eyepiece is destroyed, its head spins around uncontrolably.
After the Daleks harnested background radiation as a power source, they developed a shield for their casings that would melt bullets, making the eyepiece more protected and harder to take out.(DW:The Parting of the Ways)
