Bayldon Copper

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Bayldon Copper was an employee aboard the Titanic.

Biography

Bayldon pretended to have a first class degree in "Earthonomics" to get the job of Ship Historian. In reality he had been a student at Mrs Golightly's Happy Travelling University and Dry Cleaners.

He was a travelling salesman and had reached retirement with little to show for a life's work. He assisted the Tenth Doctor in defeating the Host. After this adventure, he stood on Earth with no possessions save for the clothes on his back and a million-pound credit card. He had been issued by the Capricorn Cruise Lines for the use of purchasing trinkets from the local life forms on Earth including samples of their local delicacy, beef.

After being refused an opportunity to travel with the Doctor (because of the Doctor not wanting a new companion at the time), the Doctor informed him that the credit card he had was worth the local equivalent of 50,000,056 Credits. Ecstatic at his newfound wealth, he planned to make a living on Earth so he wouldn't spend the rest of his life in prison on Sto for fraud. (DW: Voyage of the Damned)

A Mr. Copper Foundation developed the Sub-wave communication network used by Harriet Jones. (DW: The Stolen Earth) It is not known whether this has any connection to Bayldon Copper.

Bayldon would presumably have been one of the few individuals on Earth not to turn into The Master, because he was not human. His location, actions, or even his presence on Earth at the time of those events is unknown. (DW: The End of Time)

Personality

Bayldon Copper pretended to be knowledgeable about Earth but in reality he often made mistakes when it came to describing the Earth. Copper was once a travelling salesman but felt that he had not been able to accomplish anything in his life and therefore decided to lie in order to get a place on the Titanic. Nevertheless Copper was a kind hearted man, following the Doctor loyally and even hoped for a chance to travel with him. He also tried to comfort the Doctor about the death of Astrif Peth telling him to let her go. Bayldon was exstatic to find out that he was a millionare and promised to make the Doctor proud. (DW: Voyage of the Damned)

Whether Copper ever fulfilled this promise is unconfirmed but it is possible that he may have indirectly helped the Doctor save the whole of reality as the company that developed the sub-wave communication network was called Mr Coppers Foundation. However it is unknown if Mr Copper's Foundations was founded by Bayldon or if the name was just a coincidence. (DW: The Stolen Earth)

Behind the scenes

  • American actor Dennis Hopper was considered for the role of Mr. Copper, and was later offered the part of Max Capricorn. The actor was interested in appearing in the show, but the idea fell through.[1]
