Forum:Rename category:Tardis Index File wiki
If this thread's title doesn't specify it's spoilery, don't bring any up.
So the main category for anything having to do with wiki adiminstration is Category:TARDIS Index File Wiki. That's quite a long category name for one of the four main categories on the wiki. It seems to me, as well, that it's not particularly intuitive. Can we change it to category:Tardis, since that matches the namespace of many of the pages inside, and since standard practice on Wikia is to make the administrative folder be our project name — that is, what happens when you type {{ns:project}}: {{ns:project]}. This would mean that the current category:TARDIS would have to be moved to category:The Doctors TARDIS, which is what it should be anyway.
Alternately, we could go for something more descriptive, but still shorter than what it is now, like category:wiki maintenance or category:Tardis maintenance.
If we wanted to go with a name that has more of a Doctor Who vibe to it, we could go with category:The Hub, since none of our main categories reference Torchwood at present.
Either way, I strongly think we've got to get rid of the word Wiki in "Tardis Index File Wiki", because officially we're "Tardis", "Tardis Inex File" or "Tardis Index File, the Doctor Who Wiki". It's true that, at one time, our logo implied "Tardis Index File Wiki", but not anymore. Time to rebrand that main folder to either be in harmony with out new logo, to emphasize our actual project name (in which case, we sentence case the word Tardis (in compliance with popular use in the mainstream British press, I might add), or to be more descriptive.

- I disagree that category:TARDIS needs to be renamed to category:The Doctor's TARDIS. Not everything in that category applies exclusively, or even at all, to the Doctor's specific TARDIS.
- For this category, could shortening it to category:Index File work? That'd more clearly label it as a component of this wiki, and limit confusion with anything in-Universe. Alternately you could go with something solely descriptive and not at all fancy, like category:admin. Rob T Firefly 04:12, May 22, 2011 (UTC)
- I also disagree with the moving of Cat:TARDIS to Cat:The Doctor's TARDIS for precisely the reasons Rob T Firefly states, not everything in that category is specific to the Doctor's TARDIS.
- I'm not fussed by any other alternatives Tardis/Wiki maintenance would be fine. I think if we're trying to separate out the admin/maintenance aspects that's what we should be emphasising rather than creating a potentially confusing category name to tie into the wiki's name. --Tangerineduel / talk 16:07, May 22, 2011 (UTC)
- Well, if category:TARDIS contains stuff about more than the Doctor's TARDIS, then it's confusing and needs to be renamed. It's pretty clear that there are enough pages covering aspects of the Doctor's TARDIS in particular to justify a category on its own. I haven't actually looked at the contents of category:TARDIS to know what it contains that doesn't pertain to the Doctor's TARDIS, but I'm guessing there's enough to justify its own category as well. Mixing them together is less useful, from an organisational standpoint, than pulling them apart.
- But that's getting off topic slightly. You seem to have expressed a clear bias against category:Tardis to replace category:Tardis Index File Wiki, despite that being a wikia-traditional way of naming the folder that contains all the maintenance stuff on a wiki. Fine. That's totally cool. I'd be against Rob's suggestion of "Index File", as "index file" is in no way a part of our formal project name, so it's as random as a "Who-y name" that we could come up with, and not as clear as a straightforward name. So, it seems to me that it's down to
- Tardis maintenance (good, cause at least our project name is in there; bad, cause maybe it implies maintenance on "the TARDIS")
- Wiki maintenance (good, cause it's straightforward; bad, cause it's just boring)
- The Hub (good, cause it's short and to the point. It works as a pun on Torchwood, but it's also just a plain English term that conveys the sense of what the category is even if you've never seen the first couple of series of Torchwood.)
- Of the three, I clearly favor "the Hub". If no one has strong objections, I'll change it in seven days from the following datestamp.
