Dalek City
Kaalann was the capital city of Skaro, homeworld of the Daleks.
- Kaalann may be the same city as the Dalek City seen in previous stories.
City of the Daleks
The city was constructed by the Daleks after the conclusion of the Thousand Year War. From the city, the Daleks plotted to destroy all other life on Skaro so they could claim the planet as their own. Their plan was thwarted by the First Doctor and the Thals, who cut off the power the Daleks needed. (DW: The Daleks, REF: Doctor Who: The Dalek Handbook)
The Daleks later created a link between 41st century Kalaann and Earth in the year 1866. The Dalek Emperor and his guards resided in the city. When the Second Doctor caused a civil war between the Black Daleks and the Daleks with the Human Factor, Kalaann was devastated. (DW: The Evil of the Daleks) However, even after the Doctor left, believing the Dalek race had come to an end, the Humanised Daleks were defeated and the Daleks set about rebuilding Kalaann. When the Time Lords sent the Doctor to prevent the Daleks' creation, Dalek history was altered. Whether the Kalaann seen in The Daleks and The Evil of the Daleks is the same Kaalann seen in City of the Daleks is unknown.
The Doctor visited Kaalann many years later in his own timeline in an alternate timeline, traveling there from a devastated London in 1963 which was the result of the Daleks chainging history. The Daleks had rebuilt a ruined Kaalann and had altered the timeline using a Time Lord device called the Eye of Time which had been lost during the Last Great Time War. The Doctor managed to free the Eye, returning the timeline to normal. Kaalann was also returned to normal, becoming ruined, as it had been before the Progenitor Daleks found it.
The Doctor and Amy explored Kaalann's many different areas in the city while looking for the device that the Daleks were using to alter the timeline.
Storerooms
Kaalann had several storerooms with discarded Dalek parts. It was in one of these that the Doctor landed his TARDIS.
Factories
Kaalann was used by the Progenitor Daleks as a giant factory. Daleks were produced on a production line. This area was of higher security; it was heavily guarded by Drone and Scientist Daleks. The factories were connected to the other rooms by corridors infested with Varga plants.
Visualiser Room
The Visualiser room was a large room where the Daleks recorded and monitored all Dalek activity across the universe. It was controlled by the Visualiser Eye, a large Dalek Eye on one of the walls. The room was full of large data banks and also contained three consoles. In City of the Daleks, the Doctor had to use these consoles to deactivate the Eye's security beam.
The Supreme Council Chamber
The Supreme Council Chamber was where the Dalek Emperor and the Eye of Time were located. The chamber had two levels. The Emperor and the Eye were located on the top level. It was in this room that the Doctor deactivated the Eye and reversed the timeline. (VG: City of the Daleks)
Appearance
Kaalann's atmosphere was heavily polluted by the Daleks' factories. Thirty percent of the atmosphere in the area was made up of sulphuric acid. The sky had an orange colouration and acid rain constantly fell over the city.
Kaalann had many tall buildings, including the Supreme Council Chamber. (VG: City of the Daleks)
Behind the scenes
- The constant acid rain and orange colouration of the city are similar to the complex on the Space Pirate Homeworld in the video game Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
