Barker worked with a Russian spy who went by the alias of Miles Barrington Smythe. On 23rd November, 1963, Miles left secret documents for Barker which instructed him to use his government employee card to access information, in William Pike's cab before being arrested by the Police. Bill Pike was taken to a police station along with Jorjie Turner from 2050, due to her strange communications device. Barker questioned Bill as to why the Russian documents ended up in his cab, he insisted that he didn't know and that he was not a spy although Barker was determined to cover up his own involvement with the Russians. K9 Mark 2, Jorjie and Starkey arrived to save him as he was the great-grandfather of their friend Darius Pike. Barker prepared to arrest them but K9 shown him his firepower, Barker gave in and allowed them to dissapear. Jorjie told Bill to escape as he knew he was innocent, he told her he had to prove his innocence. Barker argued that the evidence proves otherwise, saying he was is guilty until proven innocent. He detected that the message was to a spy instructing him to use his government employee card to access information and as Bill was not a government employee, he was proven innocent. K9 tried to find who the name of the spy is but the document self-destructed before he do so. Starkey, Darius and K9 later returned to their own time as Bill was let free.

Barker later met with Miles to discuss their close escape, he complained that Miles took his time setting the self-destruct and that "the mechanical-dog" almost revealed him. Miles told him he was interested to see it's capabilities, Barker hoped the next time he passes material on to him he'll take better care of it. Miles argued that he needed to hide it quickly and the Cab was convinient, Barker handed him a spare copy of the Document. (K9TV: The Cambridge Spy)
