"Jessie" was an insult once hurled by the public at members of the football club, Delchester United. Once the side's play began to deteriorate in 1977, the phrase, "they're playing like a bunch of jessies", was heard in the club's stadium on game days. It indicated that the football players were weak and ineffectual men. (DWM: Doctor Who and the Nightmare Game)

Unexplored by the comic is the extent to which the slang is primarily Scottish in origin, and the fact that it suggests effeminacy and/or cowardice.
