Ian was a companion of the human scientist Dr. Who and the boyfriend of the Doctor's granddaughter Barbara.

Ian accompanied Dr. Who, Susan and Barbara on his first trip to the planet Skaro in the Tardis, a time and space machine created by Dr. Who, where he met the Daleks. (Dr. Who and the Daleks) He subsequently met an ancient Roman legion in 64 A.D. and soon ended up as a gladiator (Dr. Who and the Daleks, ST: The House on Oldark Moor) They later travelled to Oldark Moor and met Count Tarkin. Ian was clumsy and somewhat foolish, leading Susan to have a low opinion of him.

Since neither he nor Barbara appeared in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D., it can be surmised that they left Tardis sometime in the interim.
