Bad Night was the first of five Night and the Doctor shorts produced exclusively for the "Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series" DVD and Bluray box sets. It was written by showrunner Steven Moffat.

- The opening shot of the TARDIS interior as the phone rings is similar to the opening shot for the prequel to DW: Let's Kill Hitler.
- Amy is seen wearing her nightie and dressing down ensemble. (DW: The Eleventh Hour, DW: The Beast Below)
- Queen Elizabeth II appears, transformed into a goldfish. She previously appeared in DW: Voyage of the Damned and, via archive footage, in DW: The Idiots Lantern. She was also mentioned in DW: Planet of the Dead (TV story).
- The Doctor denies sneaking away at night to be with River Song, which he subsequently contradicts when Amy asks how River's doing. The Doctor spending his nights with River is the theme of four of the five "Night and the Doctor" shorts.
- In DW: The Wedding of River Song the Doctor mentions that River will spend her days in Stormcage, and hints that her nights will be spent with him.
