1983[[edit source]]

If I understand correctly, this dating is computed backwards from The Locked Room, which happens contemporaneously with The Tenth Planet in 1986 and is stated to happen 3 years after this story. If so, this is a rather ingenious and careful consideration. So I'm sorry to offer an objection to it.

The 3 years are mentioned by Sida, if I remember correctly. At any rate, these are years in the context of the planet introduced in The Savages. I do not normally watch missing serials, so I have no knowledge of the source materials of The Savages. But, unless it is stated there that their year is the same length as the year on Earth, I'm not sure 1983 can be established beyond doubt.

On the other hand, the same method can be used to date The Savages themselves, though not precisely. We know that Steven Taylor was older than 21 when he started travelling with the Doctor (maybe a better dating was given, which I can't recall). During The Locked Room, he is around 100. Being human, he would probably count his own age in Earth years. So The Savages must be happening somewhere in the 20th century, perhaps, closer to its beginning.
