Official name?

Has an official name for these guys been given? I personally like "The Swarm" a lot better than "alien stingrays", but I didn't want to rename the page if that's the official designation. - Monkey with a Gun 23:21, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Now that I note that there's already a page for The Swarm, how about "The Swarm (The Invisible Enemy)" and "The Swarm (Planet of the Dead)"? Or, alternately, "The Swarm" and "The Swarm (virus)"? Monkey with a Gun 04:30, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm firmly opposed to a name change. The only name given to them by the script is "alien stingray". This name is also used in the accompanying Confidential, and in some material on the official site. Sure, it may not be their actual name, but it is "official" in the sense that it's the only one the BBC have given us. One definitely gets the sense that it's the name entered in the official UNIT files. Come to think of it, they probably don't have a "proper" name, because they're not shown to be sentient. Any names are those given by other species. Is the real name of horses "horse"? Let's ask one and find out . . . CzechOut | 17:23, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not really for a change of name either. Though for a slightly different reason (though I agree more or less with CzechOut's point). When they're referred to, or how the characters relate to the stingrays it's as a singular or three rather than as a swarm. The information about them is gathered from the individual encounters; the stingray eating the Tritovores, Christina's encounter and the three that go through the wormhole all more or less singular encounters with the single stingray, rather than as a collective whole.
We can always chuck a {{conjecture}} on the page if there's still some contention over the name. --Tangerineduel 17:36, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
The only reason I was agitating for a name change was really my dislike of the name "alien stingray". I agree, the name "The Swarm" is never used in or out of universe, and C/O has a good point. But still think it sounds a bit dopey. Oh well; somebody out there probably thinks "The Doctor" is a terrible name for a protagonist. - Monkey with a Gun 06:07, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Just reanimating a thread here, but I really think we should move this page back to "alien stringray". It's really awkward to refer to the individuals as a swarm, there already a page called "the Swarm" (and there no need to overcomplicate things), the Swarm is too vague a title to be really useful and having the disambiguity and the conjecture at the top of the page just clogs it up. Other options besides "alien stringray" are encouraged, but the Swarm title just bothers me. -<Azes13 03:58, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

If anyone's interested the BBC's Doctor Who Adventures magazine consistantly make reference to simply "Stingray" even including a 'Make your own Stingray' ! not the best make it to be honest, but the 'Make your own Crucible' really is crap! The Librarian 23:32, September 5, 2009 (UTC)
I personally think that this page should be renamed The Swarm and The Swarm (The Invisible Enemy) be The Swarm (virus). Alien Stingray is used as a generalization by the BBC, I think it should be named Stingray before Alien Stingray. I also have heard The Swarm used on BBC websites, wheras Alien Stingray hasn't. I believe The Swarm is probably the most canon name, then Stingray and finally Alien Stingray. Bigredrabbit 05:05, November 3, 2009 (UTC)
I think it should be named Alien Stingray because, as it was stated above, it's the only name given to us. Who named it The Swarm anyway? How can one creature be a swarm?? --Donovan-j-charlie 20:55, November 15, 2009 (UTC)

I think it should be called Stingray. This has been given in a few sources, i.e. Doctor Who: The Ultimate Monster Guide and Doctor Who Adventures and I seem to remember Russel T. Davies referring to them as this on an interview on the Doctor Who website. I think Stingray is definitely the most canon name we've heard so far. I'm A Hydroponic Tomato!
