Leaving the army at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Knox went looking for other wars and better pay. Upon his arrival in Japan, he was thrown in Mamoru's prison for 8 months, before he was given the chance to either serve Mamoru or to burn. He eventually became a samurai, elevating his position to chief As Westerners were forbidden from being in Japan under sakoku, Knox disguised his face with a red mash when outside of Nagomi Castle, wearing red armour and a red mask, earning him the nickname "Aka-san", or "mr red".
