You can tell the narrative without saying who struck the final blow. I mean, honestly, "The monster got defeated when the dots lined up in a T formation" makes no sense, and doesn't make sense within the story either. The gameplay is certainly meta to the narrative. Therefore, the narrative can be told without the gameplay.
