UNIT Captain Alice Wells's grandfather was a soldier, as his son would later be. He lost an arm in a Belgian trench. As Alice grew up, he told her war stories, although she always got the sense that he was holding back the worst of it. By 2000, he was dead; Alice mentioned him to Commander Brak during their lengthy conversation about the differences between human and Sontaran approaches to warfare.
