Beck's syndrome a was deadly disease. George suffered from the illness and went to Tranquil Repose, where he was put into suspended animation. Prior to this, he started a fund to find a cure. His wife found one, but continued to pretend she hadn't forty years later so she could keep the fund money. (DW: Revelation of the Daleks)
