Tardis:Vertical spacing

Policy page
Revision as of 15:09, 1 September 2012 by CzechOut (talk | contribs)
Put only one vertical space, or carriage return, between paragraphs. Do not introduce unnecessary carriage returns elsewhere in articles, but keep one carriage return at the end of every document. You can put two horizontal spaces after a period, exclamation point or question mark if you want. But the bot will correct your typing to the 21st century standard of a single space.

Vertical spacing

As formally adopted in a forum discussion, there should be no more than one blank space between paragraphs, sections, etc. Put another way, a single blank carriage return between paragraphs or sections is sufficient.

Do not put blank carriage returns at the top of a document or after a template, such as an infobox.

A single blank carriage return should separate the main body of an article and the category list. In the Monobook skin — and in Wikia, if you turn off the category module — the categories appear at the very end of the document. If, however, you're using the Wikia skin defaults, you may think that the categories are in a separate little box off to the right of the editing screen, and there's an extra carriage return at the end of the document. Do not delete this extra space. The bot is just going to put it back, anyway.

Sentence spacing

Although there has been some sporadic discussion about adopting a standard, the community has never actually ruled on the number of spaces which should follow a period or other full stop. Until a definitive ruling comes from forum discussion, editors are at liberty to use either one space after a period — which is the current standard on most online style sheets — or two, which was the prevailing rule in business until about the year 2000.

That said, a code cleaning bot does actually ensure that only one space exists between a full stop and the next character. However, this bot is not in continuous operation, which means that you will occasionally find instances of double-spacing around the wiki.
