1961 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred. In the autumn of 1961, Michael Barry, the BBC's Head of Drama, resigned. Donald Baverstock extended an invitation to Canadian Sydney Newman and he accepted in this year. He would not take up his position until 1962, however, because he remained under contract with ABC Television until 1962.
