Over a hundred and thirty years earlier, in 1852, the assembly of the state of South Carolina first arrived at a decision that secession for the United States was their moral right. However, they temporarily stayed their hand and remained in the Union until 24 December 1860, when, through the promulgation of the Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union, they seceded.
