The $64,000 question

Was this particular idiom actually in use as early as 1943? I'm aware that it first sprung from the CBS radio show Take It or Leave It, which was on the air during World War II. But at that point the prize money on offer was only $64. It wasn't until the show moved from radio to television in June 1955 that the prize money was raised to $64,000. I suppose the rigger could have been exaggerating for emphasis, but that seems a tad contrived to me. Any thoughts?Leda74 10:36, June 27, 2014 (UTC)
