- Along with The Pyralis Effect, this is one of only two appearances of K9 Mark II in The Companion Chronicles.
- There are multiple sly references to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series by Douglas Adams. ("tired TV executives", the Doctor buys Romana a towel, etc)
- This story takes place after Nightmare of Eden.
Continuity

- Romana mentions the TARDIS' food machine, when the Doctor is talking about doughnuts. (TV: The Daleks)
- The Doctor claims to hate celery, in contrast to his next incarnation. (TV: Castrovalva, The Caves of Androzani)
- At the spa, Romana saw some humans (TV: An Unearthly Child et al), some Morestrans (TV: Planet of Evil) and a couple of Shelternax, some Pakhars, (PROSE: Legacy et al) and some Lurmans, (TV: Carnival of Monsters) as well as a couple of leopard-like species she couldn't identify.
