Private John Paterson was a member of the Terran Security Forces.
He was captured by the Selachians. Zoe Heriot was later imprisoned with him on Kalaya. They escaped, but were recaptured and taken to Ockora. The Second Doctor found them there just as the planet was about to be destroyed. Paterson stayed to operate the transmat cubicles so they could get away, and then died in the ensuing explosion.
