Help:Infobox development 2009 to 2011

Support page

This page (and its links) hopes to build on a project begun by a user on this wiki to create new community editable infoboxes for use across this wiki to replace the infoboxes currently in use.

We would like to build an information source and 'how to' for editing and creating infoboxes as well as creating the specific infoboxes themselves. This way we can learn through the creation and development process so the community does not need to rely on one specific user for the development or alternation of a specific infobox or feature.

Current Infobox Projects

  • Template:Infobox Spinoff test is testing infobox, currently it has applied to it 'optional fields' or the auto-collapse feature which will remove those fields that have no information added to them.

Implementation

Implementation of the collapsing field structure to various infoboxes has begun, so far it has been added to:

In universe use

  • Template:Infobox Individual, which has the collapsing field structure added to "alias", "race", "home planet", "home era", "appearances" and "actor". (all fields except name and image)
  • Template:Infobox Astronomical Object, which has the collapsing field structure added to all fields except 'name' and 'image'.
  • Template:Infobox Species, which has the collapsing field structure added to "aka", "origin", "affiliation", "mentions", "individuals" and "appearances".
  • Template:Infobox Conflict, which has collapsing field structures added to: "part of", "date", "location", "result", "combatants", "commanders" and "strength" (all fields except Conflict name and image).
  • Template:Infobox Organization, which has had collapsing fields applied to: "name", "leader", "aka", "affiliation", "bases", "appearances", "membrs", "garrison" (all fields except name and image).

Out-of-universe use

Basics of Infobox Design

The Infobox template is designed based on the wiki-style table coding. The coding within the table is very versatile and can allow for fairly simple or rather complicated designs. No mater how complicated the infobox template, the usage of the template on a target page allows for easy editing of the important information while the complicated coding is hidden from the regular editor.

An example showing both basic design and more advanced design can be viewed at Template:Infobox_TV_test.
