The Indian Territory was a United States territory which later became known as Oklahoma.
Fewer than fifty winters before Spring 1880, five Native American tribes including the Seminole were forced to march westward from the Southern United States to the Indian Territory when the Indian Removal Act was passed. The Seminole had been driven westward by 1832. The Native Americans knew this march as the Trail of Tears.
